  • Clothing: It is helpful to wear a comfortable, two-piece outfit (like a top and pants/skirt). This allows you to undress only from the waist down, keeping you more comfortable.
  • Menstrual Cycle: The scan can be performed at any time during your menstrual cycle. However, depending on the reason for your scan, your doctor may advise a specific time. For instance, to assess the endometrial lining, the best time is often right after your period ends.

Pre-requisites

  • You will typically need a referral or prescription from your doctor to have a Transvaginal Ultrasound.

Best Time to Take the Transvaginal Ultrasound

Procedure for Taking a Transvaginal Ultrasound

Understanding the transvaginal ultrasound procedure step-by-step can help alleviate any anxiety. At Cadabams Diagnostics, our compassionate sonographers will guide you through the entire process.

Step 1: Preparation

Upon arrival, you will be checked in. A sonographer will call you into the private ultrasound room, explain the procedure, and ask you to empty your bladder. You will then be asked to undress from the waist down and will be given a sheet or gown for privacy.

Step 2: Positioning

You will be asked to lie on your back on a comfortable examination table, with your knees bent and your feet possibly placed in stirrups, similar to a gynecological exam.

Step 3: The Transducer

The sonographer will show you the slender transducer probe. For your safety and hygiene, it will be covered with a new, sterile, disposable sheath. A water-based, hypoallergenic lubricating gel will be applied to the covered probe to allow for easy and comfortable insertion.

Step 4: Insertion & Imaging

The sonographer will then gently insert the probe a few inches into your vagina. This should not be painful. They will then carefully move and angle the probe to capture clear images of your uterus, ovaries, and surrounding structures from multiple perspectives. You may be able to see the images on a screen during the scan.

Step 5: Duration

The entire imaging process is usually completed in 15 to 30 minutes. Once all the necessary images are captured, the probe is removed, and you can get dressed.

Caution Before Taking the Test

To ensure your safety and comfort, please remember to:

  • Inform the staff of any latex allergy. The standard probe covers contain latex, but non-latex alternatives are readily available.
  • Communicate any discomfort. If you experience any significant pain at any point, tell the sonographer immediately. The procedure should not be painful.
  • Confirm your pregnancy status. Always let the staff know if you are or might be pregnant.

Risks & Limitations of the Transvaginal Ultrasound

Risks

The Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS) is an extremely safe procedure with virtually no risks. It does not use ionizing radiation, like X-rays or CT scans, making it safe even during pregnancy. The primary concern for most patients is potential discomfort. Some women may feel mild pressure during the insertion of the transducer. Limitations

While a TVS provides excellent detail of the lower pelvic organs, it has some limitations. Furthermore, its view can be limited for assessing masses or structures that are located higher up in the pelvis or abdomen, outside the range of the probe.
